Common Questions
How do you eat chicken tostadas?
Tostadas can definitely be a little messy, but that’s part of the fun! I like to pick them up like a big, flat taco and take bites straight from the crispy tortilla. You can also break them into pieces and scoop up the toppings like nachos. If you’re serving them to little ones (or just want a cleaner experience), feel free to crumble the tostada and eat it with a fork (or just use a soft tortilla instead). However you do it, they’re delicious!
Can I make this recipe vegan?
Absolutely! To make these tostadas vegan, just swap the chicken for:
–Black beans or pinto beans – Warmed and lightly seasoned.
–Vegan chick’n strips – Cooked and shredded just like the chicken.
–Sautéed mushrooms or tofu – A great way to add texture and protein!
Also be sure to use a vegan-friendly Italian dressing or make your own simple avocado lime crema instead.
What is the difference between a tostada and a tortilla?
A tortilla is soft and flexible, which is perfect for tacos, enchiladas, or wraps. A tostada, on the other hand, is a tortilla that’s been baked or fried until it’s crisp and golden. Think of it like the crunchy cousin of a taco shell! That crispy base gives tostadas their signature crunch and makes them such a satisfying meal.
What makes a tostada different from a taco?
Tostadas and tacos both start with a tortilla, but the main difference is how you eat them:
Tostadas are flat and open-faced with toppings layered on top. They’re crispy and eaten kind of like mini pizzas!
Tacos are folded and soft or crunchy, holding all the ingredients inside.

Shredded Chicken Tostadas Recipe Ingredients
- Corn Tortillas – Soft white corn tortillas crisped in the oven until perfectly golden. Swap with store-bought tostada shells to save time!
- Chicken (opens in a new tab) – Boneless, skinless chicken breasts work great here. Chicken thighs would also be a tasty option!
- Italian Dressing – I got this idea from my husband’s grandma. It’s an interesting base for the creamy dressing that pairs SO well with the other flavors! Choose your favorite brand or a homemade version.
- Frozen Street Corn – A mix of corn, peppers, and seasonings that brings tons of flavor. You can also use regular frozen corn and add chili powder with smoked paprika for that smoky flavor!
- Avocado – For the creamy dressing. Make sure it’s ripe for the best texture!
- Avocado Oil (opens in a new tab) – Or avocado oil spray, for crisping the tortillas.
- Shredded Lettuce – Romaine or iceberg both work well here.
- Lime Juice – Optional. I love how it adds a bright finishing touch!

How to Make Chicken Tostadas
One of my favorite things about tostadas recipes is how easily they come together! All you’ll need is a large sheet pan (opens in a new tab) and about 30 minutes to get started. Here’s how to make the BEST chicken tostadas:
- Crisp the Tortillas – Brush or spray both sides with avocado oil, then bake until golden and crispy.
- Marinate the Chicken – While the tortillas bake, coat the chicken in Italian dressing and let it marinate.
- Bake the Chicken & Corn – Add the chicken to the sheet pan and bake. Partway through, add the street corn to the same pan to save time and dishes.
- Blend the Dressing – While everything bakes, blend the remaining Italian dressing with the avocado until smooth.
- Assemble – Shred the chicken, then layer the tostadas with lettuce, chicken, street corn, and that creamy avocado dressing.
Tips
- Buy pre-made tostada shells to save time! While baking them fresh always tastes better, this can be helpful on super busy weeknights when you don’t feel like making dinner.
- Marinate the chicken the night before for the best flavor.
- Make sure that tortillas are evenly coated in oil for the best crispy texture!
- Use a different sauce –
- Cook and store components separately, then assemble fresh for super quick lunches or dinners.
- Add hot sauce, jalapeños, or chili flakes if you love heat!

How to Store
Refrigerator – Store the cooked chicken, corn, and dressing separately in airtight containers for up to 3 days. Assemble just before serving for best results!
Freezer – This chicken freezes well! Store in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months.
Reheat – Warm the chicken and corn in the microwave or on the stovetop before assembling. Crisp the tortillas in the oven for a few minutes if needed.

What to Serve with Chicken Tostadas
- Fresh Fruit – Something simple like sliced watermelon, pineapple, or a mango salad balances out the savory flavors perfectly.
- Healthy Chips + Guac – You can never go wrong with tortilla chips and homemade guacamole! Or add this homemade salsa on the side, instead.
- Cilantro Lime Rice – A great way to bulk up the meal, especially if you’re serving a crowd. And it adds more flavor!
- Black Beans or Refried Beans – Add some extra plant-based protein and fiber!
- A Refreshing Drink – Think sparkling lime water or a homemade agua fresca for a fresh finishing touch.
