What are Overnight Oats?

Overnight oats are a mix of rolled oats with almond milk, coconut milk or regular milk and are eaten cold. They’re mixed with spices such as cinnamon, fresh or dried fruit and sometimes even chocolate for something extra indulgent. And if you don’t love the texture of overnight oats, you can always blend them as well!

To make overnight oats just put everything into a mason jar, give it a mix and let it chill overnight in the fridge. The oats soak up all the flavors and are ready to go in the morning!

Overnight Oats Base

  • Rolled Oats
  • Cinnamon
  • Brown Sugar – I love the “cookie” texture that brown sugar gives these oats, but maple syrup works great for a refined sugar-free option!
  • Almond Butter (opens in a new tab)
  • Plain Greek Yogurt – Vanilla Greek yogurt works great, too.
  • Almond Milk
  • Vanilla Extract

How to Make Oatmeal Overnight Oats

This Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Overnight Oats recipe couldn’t be easier! All you’ll need is 5 minutes and some Overnight Oat Jars w/ Lids (opens in a new tab) (or mason jars). Here’s how to make Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Overnight Oats:

  1. Mix the Ingredients: Divide rolled oats, cinnamon, brown sugar (or maple syrup), almond butter, Greek yogurt, almond milk, and vanilla into two jars or airtight containers.
  2. Stir Well: Mix everything together until smooth and well combined. Make sure the almond butter is fully incorporated for that classic “oatmeal cookie” flavor!
  3. Add Mix-Ins: Stir in the crushed walnuts and raisins for the ultimate oatmeal raisin cookie vibe.
  4. Refrigerate Overnight: Seal the jars with airtight lids and refrigerate for at least 6 hours (overnight is ideal for the best texture).
  5. Enjoy: In the morning, give it a stir and top with additional toppings if desired. Enjoy straight from the jar!

Overnight Oat Recipe Tips

These simple tips will take your overnight oats to the next level!

  • Leave overnight oats in the refrigerator for a minimum of 6 hours for the creamiest texture (but overnight is best).
  • Don’t have almond milk? Use any milk you love—oat milk, cashew milk, soy milk, or even regular dairy milk.
  • If you prefer a thicker consistency, lessen the amount of milk. If you’d like a light consistency then add an extra 1/4 cup of milk or omit the Greek yogurt!
  • Feel free to add more almond milk in the morning to adjust the consistency to taste.
  • Go beyond walnuts and raisins – top with fresh or dried fruit, shredded coconut, chia seeds, or a sprinkle of nutmeg for extra flavor.
  • Store in mason jars with lids for a grab-and-go breakfast that’s perfect for busy mornings!

Topping Ideas for These Homemade Overnight Oats

Take your Oatmeal Cookie Overnight Oats to the next level with these topping options:

  • Fresh Fruit: Sliced bananas, diced apples, or fresh berries.
  • Crunchy Add-Ins: Toasted pecans, sliced almonds, or Pumpkin Flax Granola for extra texture.
  • Drizzles: A swirl of honey, a drizzle of maple syrup, or a spoonful of melted almond butter.
  • Spices: Sprinkle on extra cinnamon, nutmeg, or a pinch of ginger for a warm, cozy vibe.
  • Extras: Mini chocolate chips, unsweetened coconut flakes, or even a dusting of cocoa powder for a touch of indulgence.

How to Meal Prep Overnight Oats

Overnight oats are perfect for busy mornings, and this recipe is super meal-prep friendly! Simply double or triple the ingredients to make enough jars for the week. You can even customize each jar with different toppings or mix-ins, like fresh fruit, nuts, or spices.

Store the oats in mason jars or airtight containers in the fridge for up to 4 days. For the best texture, wait to add fresh toppings until just before eating. These grab-and-go jars make mornings so much easier—and so much tastier!

Store your overnight oats in airtight jars or containers in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days. For the freshest flavor, add any perishable toppings, like fresh fruit, just before serving. If the oats thicken too much, simply stir in a splash of milk to loosen them up before enjoying!

Are you supposed to divide the milk and yogurt or are those measurements what you would put in each jar??

    1. JOL Team

You’ll divide each ingredient into half for each jar to make 2 servings. If you don’t want to have to figure out those measurements, you can also combine everything together in a large bowl and divide the combined ingredients into two jars. Enjoy!

Hey Christine! Thanks a lot for sharing this time-saving recipe. I think they are perfect for morning rushes. Can I use clarified butter instead of almond butter? I love the nutty taste of ghee butter. Please suggest.

    1. Christine McMichael

Of course! I’ve never tried that. It would definitely change the flavor of the oats! You could try to replace it with half and see how that turns out to start. Almost any nut butter works great, but I’ve never tried it with ghee butter. I hope you enjoy the recipe!
