Smashed Tacos Viral Recipe

First things first: If you’ve never made smashed tacos, your life is about to completely change. This method is SO fun to make, and the topping ideas are endless! I’ve been seeing these all over Instagram (opens in a new tab) and TikTok lately, so I knew I had to give them a try with my own healthier, high-protein twist. Here I’m topping them off with a literal Caesar salad for a crunchy texture and the best flavor!

And as a busy mom of 3, I love that they can be made in just 30 minutes total time and have 31 grams of protein for a filling meal. This has become one of my family’s favorite dinner recipes, and I know you’re going to love it, too!

Ingredients

  • Ground Chicken – I used lean ground chicken, but ground turkey also works great here!
  • Minced Garlic – Adds savory flavor right into the chicken mixture.
  • Salt & Pepper – Simple seasoning that brings everything together.
  • 50/50 Mix Tortillas (opens in a new tab) – I love using a mix of whole wheat and corn tortillas for flavor and texture, but feel free to use just one or the other if preferred. Low-carb tortillas work great, too!
  • Avocado Oil – For oiling the pan. Olive oil works too!
  • Romaine Lettuce – Finely chopped so you can pile it high for that perfect crunch.
  • Feta Cheese – A little tangy, a little creamy—so good on these tacos!

For the Quick Caesar Dressing:

  • Lemon Juice – Adds brightness and a little tang.
  • Olive Oil – Smooth and rich for that classic caesar texture.
  • Worcestershire Sauce (opens in a new tab) – Just a dash goes a long way in building deep flavor.
  • Minced Garlic – Yep, even more garlic. Trust me on this!
  • Plain Greek Yogurt – A healthier swap for mayo that keeps it creamy and higher in protein.
  • Dijon Mustard (opens in a new tab) – Adds a little zip and spice to the dressing.
  • Salt & Pepper – Just enough to balance everything out!

How to Make Chicken Smashed Tacos

I love how easy this healthy 30-minute dinner idea is to make! You’ll just need a large skillet (opens in a new tab) in order to make several at one time. Here’s how to make these smashed tacos:

  1. Mix the Chicken – In a large bowl, combine the ground chicken with minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
  2. Smash on the Tortillas – Scoop about ¼ cup of the chicken mixture onto each tortilla and spread it all the way to the edges.
  3. Cook Chicken-Side Down – Heat a little avocado oil in a skillet and place the tortillas chicken-side down. Cook for 4–5 minutes until the chicken is golden and cooked through.
  4. Flip & Finish – Flip and cook for another 1–2 minutes so the tortilla gets crispy.
  5. Make the Caesar Dressing – While the tacos are cooking, whisk or shake up all the dressing ingredients until smooth and creamy.
  6. Top & Serve – Pile on chopped romaine, drizzle with dressing, and sprinkle with feta. Done!

Tips/Variations

  • Use a Meat Thermometer (opens in a new tab) – It can be tough to really know if the meat is fully cooked. Make sure the chicken hits 165°F for safe (and juicy!) cooking!
  • Cook in Batches – A large skillet can usually fit 2–3 tacos at a time. Don’t overcrowd the pan so they cook evenly.
  • Crispier Tacos – Want the tortillas even crispier? After flipping, press them lightly with a spatula.
  • Try Other Meats – Ground turkey or even ground beef work well in this recipe.
  • Add Extras – These are delicious topped with cherry tomatoes, sliced olives avocado slices, or even a sprinkle of parmesan for that true caesar salad vibe.
  • Gluten-Free Option – Swap in your favorite gluten-free tortillas!

How to Store

Refrigerator – Store the cooked chicken tacos (without lettuce or dressing) in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Dressing – Keep any leftover caesar dressing in a sealed jar or container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Reheat – Reheat the tacos in a skillet over medium heat or pop them in the air fryer for a few minutes to bring back that crispy texture!

Assemble Fresh – Wait to add the lettuce, feta, and dressing until just before serving for the best taste and crunch.
