Common Questions

Does chai have caffeine in it?

Yes, chai tea concentrate is made with black tea. It has about half the amount of milligrams of caffeine as the same amount of coffee does.

Why use oat milk and not another plant-based milk?

Oat milk is creamy, mild in flavor, and brands have started making specialized barista blend styles that work so well in drinks like this. You can always use a different plant-based milk option but look for one that is thick and creamy like soy milk or coconut milk.

Can I make it with dairy?

Of course! Simply swap the oat milk with equal parts dairy. Higher-fat milk, like whole or heavy cream, would work best for making the cold foam.

Can I use the gingerbread syrup in other drinks?

Yes! I’ll be adding it to my coffee all winter long. Try it in my Everyday Vanilla Latte Recipe, stirred into hot cocoa, or drizzled over your overnight oats, too!

Why You’ll Love This Iced Gingerbread Chai

I am SUCH a big fan of making copycat drinks at home. It saves money, time (yes, even with a drive-through option), and homemade drinks can be made with better-for-you ingredients! This Iced Gingerbread Chai Latte is creamy, perfectly sweet, dairy-free, and tastes just like the real deal! Here’s why you’ll love it:

  • Festive Holiday Flavors – The gingerbread syrup is packed with aromatic, warm spices that transport you instantly to the holiday season. You’ll be dreaming of baking and family gatherings with your first sip, I promise.
  • Starbucks Copycat – I love enjoying a Starbucks holiday drink. They make some of the best flavor combos with their seasonal drink menu so I’ve played off their tasty drink to create one you can easily make at home.
  • Save Time + Money – Stay home, or skip the stop on your way to work and make this easy treat at home for less money. Your calendar and wallet will thank you!
  • Dairy-Free – The recipe is made with oat milk which is so creamy and delicious you’d never know the iced Gingerbread Oat milk chai tea latte didn’t have milk in it.
  • 8 Minutes Total to Make – The gingerbread syrup takes just 3-5 minutes to make, and the cold foam is ready in less than 2. That’s definitely quicker than the line at a coffee shop!

Ingredients in an Iced Gingerbread Oatmilk Chai

Gingerbread Syrup

  • Maple Syrup – The maple syrup is the base of the syrup. It has a deep flavor that pairs well with the warm spices and gives a little of the molasses flavor that is typically in gingerbread. You can also make a simple syrup by dissolving 1/2 cup sugar into 1/2 water over medium heat before adding the spices.
  • Ground Cinnamon, Ground Ginger (opens in a new tab), Allspice (opens in a new tab), Ground Nutmeg, and Ground Cloves – The combination of these spices in the right ratio is what that quintessential gingerbread flavor is ALL ABOUT! It truly makes this syrup next level so your gingerbread latte will be, too. I’ll be making this syrup all winter long.

Latte

  • Chai ConcentrateChai concentrate (opens in a new tab) is a store-bought carton of ready-to-drink chai tea. You can purchase it sweetened or unsweetened, whichever you prefer. I have found that when making a tea latte and adding milk to chai, you really need the concentrate which has a much stronger flavor of all those chai spices than a brewed tea bag.
  • Oatmilk – The barista blend or barista style of oat milk (opens in a new tab) is the best type to use for drinks like these. It’s thicker and creamier than regular oat milk so the drink is much more like something you would get at a coffee shop.

Gingerbread Cold Foam

  • Oatmilk – You will want to use barista style, or barista blend oat milk for the cold foam. The thick consistency froths into a foam much better than thinner oat milk and you’ll love the taste.
  • Gingerbread Syrup
  • Pumpkin Pie Spice (Optional) – Starbucks sprinkles the top of the drink with a dash of pumpkin pie spice. Feel free to leave it off if you prefer!
